Lasik and Lasek are two ways to perform laser eye surgery. There are important differences between them and Eyesite will help you choose which will benefit you most.
Lasik eye surgery requires that a thin flap of cornea is cut with a femtosecond laser, the flap is lifted and the cornea tissue underneath reshaped with an excimer eye laser to correct your vision problem – short or long sight, reading glasses etc.
Lasek eye surgery is a surface laser eye technology in which the very thin lining layer (known as the ‘cornea epithelium’) is folded back allowing an excimer laser to reshape the cornea tissue directly underneath. The thin surface layer is then replaced. Lasek (also described by its older name PRK or a newer term Epi-Lasik) is ideal for patients with thinner corneas, small glasses prescriptions or who need laser eye surgery after cataract surgery to reduce their need for spectacles.
